A new shop in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson offers an array of soaps, lotions, and jewelry to adorn your body but its main focus is on providing services to enhance the mind/spirit/body connection.

“What’s that?” you might ask. Rachel Lopez Connelly, who recently opened The Spirit Connection with partner Gail Coveny, explains her belief that the body is composed mainly of energy that can heal your physical and spiritual ailments.

In a room in the back of the shop, Connelly offers re-connective healing treatment, in which she says she channels the energy of the universal creator to the person she is treating. Unlike Reiki, another form of energy healing, she does not touch the patient.

Connelly’s partner, Gail, offers reflexology treatments in the space as well, a practice in which she applies pressure to the soles of the feet in areas that correspond to different body organs.

Visitors to the holistic center at The Spirit Connection can also receive acupressure treatments or be led into a past life regression. An RN will also offer holistic, organic facials.

All of these services reflect a growing trend in America for alternative holistic treatment of ailments, combined with a belief that energy is quantifiable and can be harnessed to bring healing to the sick.

Many medical doctors now acknowledge the power of meditation to reduce stress and improve conditions of patients, like those with heart problems. Others, like Dr. Mehmet Oz, a heart surgeon who appears frequently on the Oprah show, says using energy to heal is the new frontier for medicine.

At The Spirit Connection, Connelly plans to bring in a series of speakers to talk about topics from Buddhism to first aid homeopathy and nutrition.

She and her partner want to create a place where people can learn about alternative healing and spirituality in small groups. That’s how Connelly, a California native who had a career in television, first learned about reconnective healing. After moving to Cornwall with her husband and three children, she studied the technique and has been practicing for two years.

For Connelly, energy comes from a divine source and it grows more powerful when people focus on it together. “Whenever you have two or more people together to learn or to heal, it changes things,” she says. At the new holistic center, she hopes to be a catalyst for that change.
