If you’re in the mood for a few laughs and some delightful entertainment by a bevy of grade-school children, then head over to Willow Avenue Elementary School on Friday evening for a preview of “Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood.”

“Doo Wop…” is a fractured fairytale in the truest sense. A king, a queen, dashing princes, a fairy godmother, and evil queen are cast among a group of 1950s doo woppers In this musical by Bill Francoeur that is based on the book by Charlie Lovett.

The princes are competing for the hand of Little Red Riding Hood, who in this production has two sisters, Medium Purple Riding Hood and Tall Green Riding Hood. The Hood parents are coach potatoes but no one else in the cast can sit still as the island girls hula across the stage, the tap dancers prance, and the doo woppers and bobby sox girls swing and sway.

And no fairy tale would be complete without a classic confrontation between good and evil, a dragon, and, in this case of course, the big (not so) bad wolf.

Director Christine Cleeves, a fourth-grade teacher at Willow, has done a fantastic job with the production and the 80 children who light up the stage. Teaching assistant Karen Corby produced the play and some two dozen parents helped design the fabulous costumes, plan the choreography, build the sets, run the lights and audio, and generally shepherd the young actors and actresses as they get to shine on stage in this production sponsored by the Willow Elementary School PTO and Drama Club.

The show is open to the public Friday evening only and tickets are only $1.00. Seats to the performances on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon are reserved for family and friends of the students who will pack the small auditorium.
