Joseph Gross, 53, defeated long-time mayor Edward Moulton, 76, in the election held Tuesday in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Gross, who campaigned on a platform calling for more transparency in government, won a decisive victory, defeating Moulton by a vote of 538 to 289.

In the race for two village trustee positions, incumbents Mark Edsall and William Fogarty won re-election, defeating challengers Rick Gioia and Charlie Moore. The final tally in that vote was Edsall, 420 votes; Fogarty, 430 votes, Gioia, 332 votes, and Moore, 302 votes.

A total of 797 votes were counted. There are 2,100 registered voters in the village. This year’s turnout was much higher than in recent years. Less than 500 people voted in the 2005 mayoral race.

A crowd including Mayor Moulton and Joseph Gross, along with the trustee candidates, village employees, and interested residents gathered in the village hall to hear the election results.

Once the vote was announced, Mayor Moulton shook Joe Gross’s hand and that of his supporters, then left the room. His defeat marks the end of 28 years in village government.

Gross thanked the many supporters who helped him in his campaign and said that his first action will be to address spending and paying down the debt with as little pain as possible.

“I thought I’d win handily,” Gross said, “cause people were ready for change—that came across loud and clear. People put their confidence in me and now it’s up to me to deliver.”

William Fogarty also thanked people for putting their trust in him and re-electing him to his tenth term as trustee. Asked about the mayoral race, Fogarty noted that Joe Gross mounted a thorough campaign and added that the mayor’s recent actions in the Cliffside Park neighborhood “kind of threw everything.”

Mark Edsall said that the board members will have some adjustments ahead but they will overcome obstacles as long as they remember that they are doing things for the village. “We will bring people up to speed and keep working,” Edsall said.

Rick Gioia, who was defeated in his bid for trustee, also called for more openness in government in his campaign. He was pleased with Gross's win and did not rule out another bid for office in the future, although he seemed satisfied with Tuesday's results.

"I had a feeling that people may be willing to take a chance on changing course on the mayor but wanting the reassurance of continuity on the board," Gioia said. "I think that is wise on the part of the citizenry, taking a chance but not too much of a chance."
