General News: Mayor Moulton Reflects on Loss, Future

Wednesday morning, after his sound defeat for re-election as mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Edward Moulton stood in his office, emptying desk drawers and reviewing files. Obviously deflated after his loss, Mayor Moulton said he doesn’t know what he will do now that he has been thrust back into private life after 28 years in office, 26 of them as mayor.

“I have a lot of good memories,” Moulton said, “I’ll take them with me.”

Moulton also clearly has some concerns. He is concerned about the future of the village now that it is in the hands of Joe Gross, who won a decisive victory to serve as mayor in Tuesday’s election with a vote margin of 538 to 289.

“He will have to do on-the-job training,” the mayor said, repeating his campaign criticism that Gross lacked administrative experience. “But they have great people working here and that will carry it for a while. The day-to-day business will be fine.”

Moulton did note that Joe Gross worked hard on his campaign, though Moulton also said he personally made 400 phone calls to people asking for their support.

Asked what he thought contributed to his defeat, the mayor agreed that the delay and expense of building the new water filter plant is partly to blame.

“I’m sorry it wasn’t online a couple of years ago,” he said, noting that some of the engineers who botched the original plans are no longer working for the engineering company.

He rejected the perception that the village government is closed, saying he just can’t buy that. He also noted that the debt is not as serious as some have painted because it is long-term debt.

“The village is in much better shape than people think it is, even the budget,” Moulton said.

Nostalgic perhaps at the turn of events, Moulton prefers to recall the accomplishments of his years in office. Asked about regrets, he quoted Frank Sinatra, “Regrets, I have a few,” he said, “too few to mention.”
