General News: Cornwall Resident on Stewart Airport Panel

Stewart Airport
January 24, 2008

A Cornwall resident has been appointed to the Stewart Airport Citizens Panel, which had its first meeting on January 23.

Brian Hunt moved to Cornwall two years ago, attracted in part by the proximity of Stewart Airport. A senior vice president at NBC, Hunt says he travels about 40 percent of the time.

?Stewart airport is great when it works out,? he said in a phone interview, ?and I hope they expand.? Hunt was upset when American Eagle cancelled its flights from Stewart to Chicago and he would like to see more convenient flights for the business traveler.

But with a wife and three children, the quality of life in the Cornwall community is also high on his list of concerns. He doesn?t want to see a ton of flights, just a few more flying to major airline hub cities would make his life a lot easier..

?It?s a stress reliever to be able to fly out of there,? he said, explaining how he often has to rise at 4:30 a.m. to drive to Newark to catch a plane.

Hunt said that he was one of three business travelers on the advisory panel, which includes environmentalists, business people, union members, health care specialists and members of the community at large. He got involved on the panel after reading about the expansion of the airport and the formation of the citizens panel. He called Port Authority and, after several phone conversations, got on board.

The panel will have no official role in the operation of the airport but Hunt said he was impressed by the Port Authority?s interest in listening to folks and promoting intelligent growth while preserving the beauty of the Hudson Valley. He said the Port Authority is predicting one million passengers will pass through the airport this year. In contrast, Newark Airport will see 30 million passengers in the same period, Hunt said.

?As a resident, I have environmental concerns, I don?t want jet fuel in my water,? Hunt said. ?But I would like a couple of more airlines going in there and a few more flights? This airport is going to grow and you might as well be part of it.?
