A Ford Explorer driving 45 to 50 mph and filled with seven teenagers struck a car on upper Duncan Avenue then flipped over, injuring the passengers, none seriously, on Saturday evening around 6 p.m.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old male from Cornwall, was charged with speeding and violating the terms of his junior license, which limits to two the number of non-family members under 21 years old allowed in the vehicle. Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and more charges may be filed although alcohol was not believed to have played a role in the crash.

The passengers in the Explorer were Jake Oliva, 16, Kristin Robillard, 16, Kristen Grace, 16, Danielle O'Rourke, 16, Dana Welch, 16, and Laura Basilico, 16. Basilico was flown out for medical treatment while all the other teens were treated in area hospitals. Police chief Williams said that all were expected to be released.

A local resident who heard the crash and came outside said that the Ford Explorer struck a car parked on the edge of the street, knocking over a dogwood tree, before it came to rest on its side in a wooded area of upper Duncan Avenue.

"Hitting that parked car saved their lives," Chief Williams said, noting that otherwise the SUV would have hit a grove of trees. The police report states that after the crash the passengers said they told the driver to "slow down, we're going to die."

Cornwall-on-Hudson and Cornwall police responded to the accident, along with COVAC and Storm King Fire Engine Company No. 2.

Comments:

I heard she's got a broken collarbone and is going to be ok. How about we take this time to THANK GOD and talk to our sons and daughters about how they'd handle it -- being a passenger in a car driven by a "friend" whose driving scared them, etc. Tough situation, I know.... but you don't get a second chance at life. Incredibly frightening.
