The prospect of the village of Kiryas Joel tapping into the same aquifer that Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson uses for its water supply was discussed at Monday evening’s village board meeting.
The board decided to contact U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Hilary Clinton to inform them of the village’s concern about the water supply. The board also discussed contacting the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Orange County Board of Health.
Earlier this month, Congress approved a bill that authorized $5 million for Kiryas Joel’s drinking water infrastructure that includes a plan to build a pipeline connecting that village with four wells in Mountainville that draw on the same aquifer as the village wells on Taylor Road. The funds for the project still require government appropriation.
A pipeline project would require a study of its impact on the adjoining wells, according to board member Mark Edsall, who is also an engineer. Edsall pointed out that the DEC could then set limits on how much water can be drawn down by the Kiryas Joel community.
Mayor Joseph Gross, who has been researching the project, told the board members that the pipeline project is still in the proposal state. “It is not written in stone,” he said.
