General News: Kids Speak: What's Wrong With Kids These Days?

February 16, 2007

By Jessica Hauserman
Eighth-grade student at CCMS

What’s wrong you ask? Concerned parents and adults are not quite sure yet, but one things is certain: the answer won’t be easy to figure out, according to the C.O.H. trustee board.

Over the past few months there have been several other articles on the subject featured in the Cornwall Local about the increasing number of kids loitering or hanging out where they don’t belong. Are they looking for trouble? Or are they just looking for a place to hang out and belong? There have been a few minor problems, such as littering, and major ones, like rocks being thrown through stores windows and defiance towards law enforcement officers.

The way kids keep themselves occupied has changed over the years. When adults such as Mr. Greevy and Mr. Ring were kids, they hung out by the riverside and played basketball in town hall. Some kids hang out there today but not many. Kids these days hang out at Ring’s Pond, C.O.H. elementary school, and just walk around Cornwall. One thing hasn’t changed, and that’s Prima Pizza. Kids have been hanging out there for years. There have been attempts to find kids a place to go. Examples are the Blue Beetle and for older teens, 2 Alices.

Despite some opinions, skateboarding is not the main issue but just a growing trend. There are some skateboarders who cause problems but it is not the result of skateboarding. Fingers are pointed at skaters for unjust reasons. Village leaders have turned to a professional who deals with troubled communities and addresses adolescent problems, like drug abuse, violence, and school dropouts. However, the solution will only come from the residents’ efforts to put an end to these problems.

My opinion is, ask the kids. They know more about what is going on in their world than their parents do. Some parents have a tight connection with their kids; they might get through and find the problem. If this doesn’t work, they should take action. Be the adult we need and take charge of what your kid is doing. Don’t try and run their life, but set boundaries and know what your kid is doing. You can fix this, but you need our help.
