General News: Public Hearings on Veterans' Exemptions

The Cornwall town board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, November 21, at 7 p.m., to address two tax exemptions for military veterans.
The first hearing will focus on a proposed property tax exemption for military personnel who served during the nation’s Cold War, between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991. A bill passed by the New York State assembly in June authorized municipalities to enact a 10 to 15 percent exemption beginning in 2008.
While reviewing the proposed exemption, town officials decided to revisit the amount of the current exemption given to wartime veterans with an eye to increasing the benefits in 2008. That proposal will be the subject of a second hearing on November 21.
