General News: DOT rep looks at village square safety

The village square in days gone by

Barbara Gosda and the other members of the Village Square Improvement Committee have been busy studying problems and looking at alternatives to enhance the center of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

On Tuesday, Gosda and Mayor Joe Gross met with a representative of the New York State Department of Transportation at the intersection of Duncan Avenue and Hudson Street to discuss improving the safety of that intersection.  According to the committee, Dr. Seitz, who owns the building at that corner, has agreed to extend the sidewalk in front if it will enhance safety.

The committee did a walk about the village with a couple of business owners on October 28th and at its monthly meeting on Monday pinpointed issues of lighting in the newly-striped municipal parking lot as well as marking an exit and an entrance from the lot.

According to the meeting minutes, the lack of wastebaskets was noted as well as the lack of signs directing drivers to the parking lot and to Route 9W.  A suggestion of placing benches along Hudson Street, perhaps donated, was also heard.

Comments:

I was up near Poughkeepsie specifically Vassar College and the rotary they constructed along Raymond ave is quite amazing. I'll be happy to snap a few pics.

Nice to see that we want to spruce upthe village to attract more sigtsee'er, but my main concern with benches is another place for the youths of the village to hang. Its bad enough now we can get down our streets to go home as the are occupying the side streets and refuse to move unless the police are called. So whats to say they wont occupy the benches that are made for others to enjoy. How abot giving the kids a place to habg out so tehy are off the streets. thanks

You cannot have it both ways. If you want to "spruce" up the village with benches, you cannot delegate who will sit there. Older people on a neighborhood stroll will no doubt find them as useful as the teenagers you are so petrified of.

"...whats to say *they* won't occupy the benches that are made for *others* to enjoy. "others"?!?! You have got to be kidding me! You mean 'anybody who is not a teenager'. I have never had a problem making my way down the sidewalk through a group of teenagers. Guess my technique? I smile, say hi and then say excuse me if they are 'reluctant'to step aside. From the comments mgmkii.... made I'll bet that she/he looks at them like *they* are dirtbags and then wonders why they are apparently so hostile. Why does this village, as a community, have such a problem accepting and supporting and, holy cow!, actually loving it's own children. No wonder so many of them are into mischief, they are harassed, unwanted, pre-judged, and made to feel like criminals. And don't give me that crap about all the wonderful things here for young people to get involved in. Unless you are full into the high school scene with sports and activities nobody wants you here.
