General News: Teen Charged in Stolen Property Case
November 05, 2007
Cornwall police arrested a 16-year-old male from Newburgh last Wednesday after he allegedly tried to sell a stolen computer back to its owner.
According to police chief Todd Hazard, Cornwall resident Richard Merino said that he noticed his laptop was missing from his home on Deer Hill Road last Sunday, October 28. The night before, several friends had been to his house, Merino told police, and some uninvited guests showed up as well.
Police say that Merino contacted one of these people, identified as “Jeff”, via My Space and asked about the computer. “Jeff” asked for $500 for the return of the computer, which Merino says he bargained down to $400 and they set up a meeting.
On Wednesday, October 31, Cornwall police officer Edward Manion was waiting at the rendezvous spot in Cornwall Plaza where the trade off was supposed to occur.
Officer Manion asked “Jeff” what was in his backpack and according to the police, the suspect pointed to Merino and said “his computer.”
Jason Booth, of Newburgh, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a class E felony, processed, and released.
