Young coders pack the community room at the Library’s Hour of Code
CORNWALL, NY – Over 30 people attended Cornwall Public Library’s Hour of Code program – an introduction to computer science coding. Kids, teens, and a handful of adults spent an hour intently working through basic coding tutorial puzzles designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. What began as one man’s vision to help students learn more about computer science, has turned into a worldwide event. This year was the library’s first time with the Hour of Code, and we are glad to become part of an effort to make coding more accessible to everyone. The tutorials are geared to appeal to youth with Star Wars, Minecraft and Angry Birds themes, but engaging enough for adults as well. At the library event, teens teamed up with younger kids to help when they got stuck, but quite often the kids were savvy enough to work through the levels on their own. Carol Loggia, a local computer programmer, volunteered to help and was impressed with how quickly the kids took to the puzzles. “They don’t need me!” she exclaimed at one point. Everyone was in agreement when the hour was up– “When will you offer this program again?” was the question the library staff heard over and over. The answer is that there are plans in the works to offer separate adult and youth programs in January.
