A Newburgh steel company has recovered $100,000 in stolen goods after Cornwall police Sergeant Philip Sinagra spotted a tractor-trailer loaded with the steel panels early Tuesday morning.
According to Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard, Sgt. Sinagra was on routine patrol on Route 32 shortly after 2 a.m. when he notice a tractor-trailer stopped on Quaker Avenue. The tractor drove away from the spot, leaving the trailer behind in the roadway, so Sinagra pulled the tractor over on Route 32.
He found that the driver of the vehicle, Kirk Ortiz, was wanted on a forgery charge in Ellenville, and he arrested Ortiz. A passenger in the tractor was released.
The tractor and trailer were impounded and that’s when police noticed that the 10-to 20 foot-long steel panels on the truck had been improperly loaded and looked like they were about to fall off. A follow-up investigation by Sgt. Sinagra revealed that the panels had been stolen during the night at Steel Style, a steel fabricating plant in the City of Newburgh. Chief Hazard said the panels were fabricated to construct swimming pools in high-rise buildings in New York City.
Ortiz, 43, faces charges of second-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class C felony. He was sent to Orange County jail in lieu of $7,500 bail with a return court date of October 26, 2007.
The investigation into the theft is on-going and Chief Hazard said the passenger in the tractor may face future charges.
