Students at Cornwall Central High School have a new opportunity to take challenging online courses as a result of a program introduced this fall at the school.

The Virtual High School is an award-winning collaborative program that offers hundreds of courses from advanced math and science to history and literature. Two Cornwall seniors are currently enrolled, one studying advanced calculus and one studying Irish literature, but as many as 25 students could be enrolled next year.

Dr. Frank Sheboy, the principal of CCHS, told the board of education at its monthly business meeting on Monday night that the online course could be taken on top of a full course load by a highly motivated student.

“I was asked to add some rigor to the twelfth-grade experience,” Sheboy explained to the board, “and this is part of it.”

Twenty-five Cornwall students are able to participate in exchange for one Cornwall teacher teaching a course at the Virtual High School. Sheboy introduced art history teacher Pam Hudson, who talked about her experience designing a course and then teaching it to students from across the country and around the world.

“Discussions are deeper and students show no trepidation about sharing their ideas,” Hudson said, noting that the student discussions are very intellectual. “It’s a opportunity to benefit the talented and gifted.”

Senior Brittany Ransbottom is taking an advanced calculus program and she said that she does four days of lessons online followed by a quiz on the fifth day. Her grade from the course will be part of her G.P.A. Although the high school provides on-site support for the program and Internet access in the computer lab, Ransbottom said she does most of her online work at home.

Dr. Sheboy says that as the school gets more involved with the Virtual High School that more students can be expected to sign up. The school board members agreed unanimously that the program offers a terrific educational opportunity for students.
