Burst pipes sent a cascade of water into The River Bank restaurant Tuesday afternoon, flooding the establishment and leading the fire department to condemn the building until repairs can be made.

Tony MIssere, the owner of the building that is home to the elegant new restaurant on the ground floor and an apartment on the second, tried to assess the damage.

"There was water coming through the ceiling, everywhere. The plaster is coming down and the water on the floor is frozen," he said as he stood outside in below-freezing temperatures. The condition of a hand-painted wall mural of the Hudson River in the restaurant's back room has not been assessed. After the fire department left the scene, workers removed some of the equipment from the restaurant.

Missere said that it could be a "couple of months" before the restaurant could re-open. The River Bank, heralded as an "important newcomer" by the Zagat survey of restaurants, was closed Tuesday when the pipes upstairs burst.

The building, built more than 100 years ago as a bank, is the former location of Cornwall-on-Hudson village hall.

Comments:

This is very sad news for all of us who have come to love this little jewel of a place in COH. The River Bank is one of the best newer places in town to meet with friends and enjoy fabulous food and drink in a beautiful and cozy setting! Lucie is an always gracious hostess, as well as the rest of her staff Cesar, Murph and her son Alex --- we wish them the best of luck in this unfortunate circumstance, and hope to see the River Bank up and operating again very soon!!!!!
