General News: Hi-Speed Chase Ends in Mountainville;Suspect Flees
February 01, 2007
Police units from throughout the area responded this morning to a report of a vehicle fleeing police on the New York State Thruway whose driver later abandoned his car in Mountainville and took off on foot.
State police investigator Michael Vazquez and his partner, Investigator John Ramos, apprehended the suspect as he came out of a stream near Otterkill and Taylor Roads in West Cornwall, about a mile from where he had left his car.
“I spotted him out of the corner of my eye,” Investigator Vazquez said, referring to the suspect, Jose Vazquez, 33, of Newark, New Jersey. “I jumped over the guardrail and tackled him. He had been running around for a long time and was pretty much spent.”
Investigator Vazquez said the incident began when the suspect failed to stop for a town of Newburgh police officer on Route 300, then got onto the Thruway, heading south, the police in pursuit. “ He was driving at speeds of up to 100 m.p.h., at times crossing over and driving south in the north-bound lanes,” Investigator Vazquez said.
Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams said that suspect pulled over at the Mountainville breakthrough area, then took off on foot. Cornwall, Cornwall-on-Hudson, Newburgh, New Windsor, and Monroe Woodbury police, along with New York State Police and Palisades Park police, all responded to the call, Williams said.
Vazquez has been charged with reckless endangerment, a felony, and unlawful fleeing from a police officer, a newly-enacted misdemeanor. He also had drugs and a hypodermic needle in his possession, Investigator Vazquez said, and faces unlawful possession charges of that. Vazquez also added that the suspect was wanted on a warrant in New York City, a fact that may have spurred his desperate attempt to flee police. He also may be charged by Newburgh police for recklessness.
