General News: Water to Flow from Black Rock This Week
October 08, 2007
After a decade of work that included bad designs and false starts, filtered water should be flowing from the Black Rock treatment plant by the end of this week, according to Cornwall-on-Hudson water superintendent Bob June.
June told the village board on Monday night that the Orange County Health Department has given its final approval to the water coming from the plant, which filters water from the mountain reservoir in Black Rock Forest.
The treatment plant has been in the works since amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act outlawed the use of untreated groundwater like that in the Black Rock reservoir, once the primary source of Cornwall water.
In addition to the reservoir, water is pumped from wells in Mountainville and is purchased from the New York City Aqueduct. Without the water from the reservoir, Cornwall was relied more on water from the NYC system, a costly alternative.
Former village mayor once called the construction of the treatment plant, which began in 1996, as Murphy’s Law run rampant. Read the full story of the plant here.
On hearing the news of the plant’s final approval, board members congratulated superintendent June. During his two-year tenure, the pace of work intensified and was ultimately successful.
June also said that the water will be mixed in with the water from the other two sources the department draws on and that it is unlikely that the taste of the water will be noticeable.
