This weekend, allow yourself to be transported to the 1940s, on stage, where a group of talented young performers will plumb the emotional nuances of life as created by the great American playwright Tennessee Williams.

Williams was a southerner who won the Pulitzer Prize for his provocative drama A Streetcar Name Desire in 1948, then came back seven years later to win it again for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

In these four one-act plays, the Canterbury Theatre Ensemble at Storm King School presents a compelling theatre experience. The actors, mostly students at the school, portray the loyalties and tensions between brother and sister or the hostility that can arise when a visiting relative stays too long.

The four plays to be performed beginning Friday, September 28, are The Long Goodbye, The Long Stay Cut Short, Portrait of a Madonna, This Property is Condemned.

Critics say that Williams found the seeds of his dramas in the dysfunctional relations inside his own childhood home. His father was abusive, his mother a faded southern belle, and his sister plagued by mental illness all her life.

The mature themes of the dramas are captured well by the players under the direction of Harold Heno, the performing and visual arts director of Storm King School. The production manager is Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Anne Fulton.

The Canterbury Theatre company has been in existence about a year and a half. They welcome actors from the community and many have performed in past productions. They have also planned an ambitious season featuring three more productions after this weekend: Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, (which is the community musical), Two Gentlemen of Verona in February and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in May.
