District Attorney Hoovler Guilty Plea in Stabbing Case

Cornwall man Pleads Guilty to Assault in the First Degree for Stabbing Victim 23 Times

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Friday, July 1, 2016, Jonathan Rizzo, 20, of Cornwall, pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree. The charges stem from an incident which occurred on April 6, 2016, outside of a bar in the Village of Cornwall. At the time he pleaded guilty Rizzo admitted that he stabbed another man, with whom he had been arguing, twenty-three times with a knife. Under the terms of the plea agreement announced in court Rizzo will receive a sentence of twelve years in state prison when he is sentenced by Orange County Court Judge Nicholas DeRosa on August 10, 2016.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the New York State Police, Town of Cornwall Police Department and Village of Cornwall Police Department for their investigation of the case.

“Our streets will be safer during the over decade that this defendant will be incarcerated,” said District Attorney Hoovler. “Those who use violence to settle disputes harm not only those whom they actually injure, but all who have a right to feel safe in their communities. Violence, whether caused by knives or guns, can simply not be tolerated in our communities. My office will continue to seek lengthy state prison sentences for violent offenders.”
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Julie Mohl.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
