General News: Skoufis secures Grant for Children's Home

Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced that he has secured a grant of $30,000 for Access: Supports for Living to renovate a children’s group home for girls in Cornwall. Skoufis toured the house with Access staff in the spring and saw firsthand the need for substantial work on the building – specifically, it requires exterior repairs which will be realized with this funding. Additionally, technology will be purchased to assist the girls with their studies.
“Through the wonderful work of Access’ employees, they are able to provide a place children can call home who would otherwise have nowhere else to turn,” said Assemblyman Skoufis. “This grant will help ensure the girls are able to continue living in a safe building with a proper quality of life.”
Licensed by the state Office of Children and Family Services, the program is run by Access: Supports for Living, an agency that provides a diverse range of services for people living with challenges to help individuals live the healthiest and happiest life possible.
“The grant obtained by Assemblyman Skoufis will support essential exterior renovations and siding for our girls group home in Cornwall and is a greatly needed boost to the capital campaign we’ve had underway,” shared Amy Anderson-Winchell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Access: Supports for Living. “These updates will ensure a warm and welcoming home for the children in our care.”
This grant will fund renovations to the exterior of the building; in addition, it will provide the resources needed to purchase technology that will enhance the girls’ studies in the comfort of their own home. Currently, eight girls live in the home, all of whom are in Access’ care due to a variety of complex family situations. Providing the best living environment helps support the girls connect with the community while working on their own goals, whether that is rejoining their families, living and working independently or attending college. All the girls attend public school, volunteer, and work in the community.
