Cornwall Public Library hosts popular Veterans Day Program

CORNWALL, NY – Over 90 people attended Cornwall Public Library’s popular Veterans Day program on Wednesday. This year, Assemblyman James Skoufis, Village Mayor, Brendan Coyne, and newly elected Town Supervisor, Dick Randazzo, as well as many library patrons chatted with Veterans from several wars, as well as current enlisted military personnel. Veterans from different wars sat, ate and shared their experiences with each other.

Soldiers’ uniforms, medals and other unique military memorabilia decorated the library’s community room. Library staff also constructed a “Wall of Honor,” showcasing photos of military personnel from local families. Tom Keller, a Cornwall High School Junior honored those who gave their lives by playing Taps on his bugle. Jillian Larson, a Cornwall High School senior proudly displayed her father’s army uniform, which showed the wear and tear of his ordeal when his plane was shot down in Afghanistan. The Cornwall Historical Society was on hand to give information on how to have a family member’s military service recognized on the Wall of Honor in Town Hall. Also on display was Hearts of Valor: The Stories of Twenty-Two Purple Heart Veterans, a book written by Jonathan Matsler for his Eagle Scout project for Troop 16 of Washingtonville. The book was conceived to honor our veterans and to benefit the National Purple Heart Museum, and a copy will be featured in the library’s local history collection, as well as available for check-out by library patrons.

The idea of this event came about when Liz Fisher’s (the library’s Head of Youth Services) daughter was in 2nd grade. That Veterans Day, she was asked by her teacher to spend her day off from school talking to veterans and writing about her talks with them. The veterans were so grateful to speak to someone who was genuinely interested in their experience that Ms. Fisher thought it would be a great idea to expand that idea. The library would like to thank all the veterans and their families who donated their time and memorabilia to this event, and look forward to continuing the tradition.
