On Saturday, Sept. 27th, I was lucky enough to join other WWII veterans on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
It is a day that will live, vividly, in my memory for the rest of my days.
We met in the Montgomery Shop Rite parking lot. I was amazed to see the parking lot full of men, women and children who came to thank us for our service.
We boarded four buses and proceeded to Stewart Field---behind our escort of over 100 motorcycles--many of whom were veterans, too.On arrival, the terminal was full of people. We walked through a narrow corridor formed by people shaking our hands and thanking us. This happened everywhere we went. This turnout impressed me more than anything else.
I thought patriotism was fading quickly---but, the hundreds of people greeting us everywhere we went renewed my faith. Patriotism is alive and well!
I want to commend the many volunteers those, behind the scenes, who put this thing together. Those who accompanied us, of course, are the ones we will always remember You couldn't find a more attentive, cheerful, caring group! Thanks to all of you!
An extra thanks to our coordinator, Martha (Marty) Purdy. She kept me informed by phone and mail before the flight and was irreplaceable all day.
