Read the online petition posted on the “change.org” website (search internet for: Cornwall geese change.org) to see some of your neighbors’ comments. SO FAR THERE ARE MORE THAN 1,000 SIGNERS…ADD YOUR VOICE!

Below, a few examples from local signers (published here with permission of the individuals who posted them):

Suzan McIntyre CORNWALL, NY My grandchildren love going to that park and seeing all the different birds.

Belinda Midlarsky CORNWALL ON HUDSON, NY Those geese are part of Cornwall too. They call Cornwall their home same as me. They deserve better.

Virginia Fasulo WARWICK, NY I grew up in Cornwall, NY. The geese were always a large part of the draw for children and families. There are more humane ways to deal with this problem.

Peter Wood CORNWALL, NY The USDA removed the geese on June 20. Sooner or later, new geese will replace those killed by the USDA. Please make sure this never happens again by attending the town meeting scheduled for July 8. We need a big crowd! The geese need YOU! Their lives depend on it!

Comments:

Sorry to play the role of wet blanket, but...
I hope everyone is aware of WHY the geese were removed. It was to curtail aircraft bird strikes.
I don't think malice played a part. It wasn't because they defecate everywhere. It wasn't to impact the nocturnal rodent infestation from the many daily loaves of bread (that could have found a better home at the Food Bank). It was to prevent another Hudson River plane crash.

And lastly, what is wrong with the ducks? They like bread too. Just make sure it is organic and gluten free. (anything less would be animal abuse)

Yves Danneels CORNWALL ON HUDSON, NY How can anyone subject the Canada geese to such extreme cruelty; it is sickening - stop this barbarism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Killing the geese to prevent "aircraft bird strikes " makes little sense to me, other then a way to justify the act to the general public as well as to the officials themselves who made this sad decision.
If they are such a problem all Canadian Geese in the Hudson Valley should be euthanized, as well as any other flocking bird who has the misfortune of landing here.

Jeanne Hali SALISBURY MILLS, NY As a Town of Cornwall property owner and tax payer I am horrified and enraged by your plans to slaughter these birds. They are five miles from the airport. Your manipulative workaround to acquire federal funds to rid these animals from the town park in the name of public safety is deceitful, sneaky, and dishonest. Miserable, petty and cheap. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Like the deer in the area, the Canadian geese represent an unhealthy overpopulation of a species. There is too much food, not enough natural habitat, and not enough natural predators.

Unfortunately, when a population becomes imbalanced with its environment, the human beings that caused this imbalance are the ones who have to make the distasteful decision to do something about it. Goose poop often contains E. coli, salmonella, and cryptosporidium, and can also contribute to algae blooms like the one that regularly chokes Rings Pond. Beyond that, they can damage aircraft and can also be very aggressive and a danger to children.

I appreciate that people don't want any animals to die...ever, but that is just not the reality of life. There is not enough room for our houses, lawns, baseball fields, parks, and parking lots, AND healthy populations of wild animals too.

So, we either move out and eliminate their countless acres of well-groomed easy food and allow natural predators like wolves, coyotes, and bear back into the area, or we kill some geese.

Take your pick.

P.S. We need to kill some more deer too. They have become as tame as cats and eat EVERYTHING
