Letters to the Editor: "GET OUT AND VOTE FOR CORNWALL SCHOOLS"

March 14, 2013

from Nicole Gold Roby

Cornwall School Budget vote is coming up before we know it.  We've been dealt some major obstacles this year, Again, because of Albany. So here is what we can do!!!!!

Our group is now almost 300 strong! (If you haven't joined yet on facebook, the group is "Get out and Vote for Cornwall Schools".

Can each of you send 2 emails to our state legislators? THIS WILL LITERALLY TAKE YOU 5 MINUTES to copy/paste the letter below and email it - I just did it myself. PLEASE this is our last shot to have our voices heard at the state level and - hopefully - bring some additional revenue to our school district. The state budget vote is March 26th so PLEASE send these 2 emails ASAP!! And please add a comment to this post and let us know after you send your emails. Let's go Cornwall!!!!! And invite all your local friends to this group and ask them to send letters too.

Email addresses are:

Assemblyman James Skoufis
[email protected] and [email protected] and cc his secretary at [email protected]

Senator Bill Larkin
[email protected]

Subject: Help us save Cornwall schools!

You can copy/paste the letter below, or feel free to edit/write your own. And see the link to other contact info, in case you also want to send letters to Governor Cuomo and New York State Education Commissioner King.

Dear Senator Larkin,
Dear Assemblyman Skoufis,

As a parent residing in Cornwall Central School District, I am joining with my neighbors to make sure that you are an informed and vocal advocate for us, your constituents. Our school district is facing a breaking point, and WE NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP OUR SCHOOLS STRONG – PLEASE!

Due to the construct of the state’s funding formula for schools and the Gap Elimination Adjustment, Cornwall has seen significant decreases in funding, year after year, despite growing enrollment. Our district is a true middle class district. We do not meet the definition of “needy,” yet we do not have a significant corporate presence to help absorb some of our tax burden.

Our administration and Board of Education have provided tremendous fiscal stewardship during tough times, as evidenced by our spending per pupil, which ranks as 4th lowest out of 60 neighboring districts. And, thanks to the strength of our students, parents, teachers, staff, administration, and Board of Education, Cornwall continues to produce student assessment scores ahead of most districts in Orange County and the region, as well as outstanding graduation, Regents diploma, and college attendance rates.

Last year, the cooperation, sacrifice, and diligent work of many in our district enabled us to keep our tax increase under New York’s tax cap, but this year is different. We have already increased class sizes to between 25-30, and cut teaching positions, teaching assistant positions, and many administrative positions and extracurricular programs. We have looked in every corner and under every rock for savings. WE ARE OUT OF OPTIONS. This year, without additional funding from the state, we will either (a) exceed our tax cap – perhaps significantly or (b) decimate our schools, cutting more class sections, and eliminating all extracurriculars and sports.

We in Cornwall have, for many years, done more with less. Please – bring a stronger and informed voice to NYS Education Budget meetings being held in Albany.

Very truly yours,
