Letters to the Editor: Gun Buyback Program

January 10, 2013

Attached is a letter our Village received regarding “Save a Life”, an amnesty Gun Buyback Program sponsored through the Orange County DA’s Office, Orange County Sheriffs’ Office and State and Local Law Enforcement.

Effective January 18, 2013 through March 18, 2013, citizens can turn in their possessed firearms in exchange for a “Shop-Rite” gift card with, “no questions asked”, at the City of Newburgh PD, the City of Middletown PD or the City of Port Jervis PD

Sincerely,

Chief Steven E. Dixon
V/ Cornwall-on-Hudson PD

County Gun Buyback Program

Comments:

Not sure what the questions might be. This is worded as though anyone with a firearm is in violation of the law. Wonder what right will next be offered up for a Shop Rite gift card. My only hope is that our founding fathers can not see this crap!

I hear they will be offering Kool-Aid gift baskets for anyone willing to forfeit their right to vote.

These programs are a huge waste of taxpayer money - all they get are rusty, broken or unwanted guns from legal owners. These don't take guns off the street and don't make you or I any safer. As for "no questions asked" what question could they ask since gun ownership is perfectly legal unless you ar a felon or crazy. The law of unintended consequences dictates that whenever the government tries to regulate behavior, worse things will result. Look at the huge spike in gun and ammo sales when Obama, Feinstein, Cuomo, bodem. Bloomberg and the usual gang of idiots threaten more gun control. Do you feel safer now?

They are, in fact, not a "huge waste of taxpayer money." Recent buyback events have seen people turning in lots of semi-automatic handguns and a number of assault rifles like the ones used in Newtown and Aurora. In addition, many of these buyback events have been sponsored by a local business or local branch of a national or regional chain, so there was little to no expense for taxpayers. This particular one is sponsored by law enforcement so, yes, it is costing taxpayers something. My guess is that the police feel that it is worth the expense to eliminate some guns from their work environment.

No questions asked is a figure of speech used primarily to make someone who might possess an illegally modified weapon or a weapon for which they do not have registration or permit (depending on the state) to be less leery of turning that weapon in. It is essentially saying, you won't get in trouble for anything no matter what the situation might be.

I would ad that these programs are completely voluntary. No one is forfeiting their rights to anything and aside from the innocuous phrase "no questions asked," the notice is phrased in a simple and non-hyperbolic fashion...which is more than can be said about some of the comments in here.

@Philip Connolly:

My only wish is that our founding fathers could see how their vaguely worded, conditional statement intended to ensure that there was some kind of standing army to face King George III and other would-be invaders of their nascent country was twisted to the point that people think they have the right to own weapons that can kill scores of people in a matter of seconds; that despite the fact that we have the most powerful military on the face of the planet.

I'd like to think they would be more than a little distraught that their words were taken so far out of context.
