Letters to the Editor: Cornwall Commons Zoning Change

November 19, 2012

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed zoning change at the Cornwall Commons project. Changing the zoning from age restricted residences to allow residents of all ages, will severely overburden our school system and transportation infrastructure.

With almost 500 new homes and many large commercial buildings, the scale of this project is huge. Yet, the developer’s figures for school aged children and traffic impact are absurdly low, defying common sense.

I urge the Town Board to require a revised environmental impact statement prior to deciding this issue. Further, I urge them to hire an impartial consultant, qualified to review the financial and traffic impacts of this proposed change, so that we can have accurate information on which to base this decision.

Despite its potentially enormous impact, the developer has proposed this zoning change with no adjustment whatsoever to the scale of their project – clearly they think we residents are suckers. Let’s not prove them right.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Small

Comments:

This was a concern when this project was going through at 55 and older. It was discussed, that if the economic climate changed the developers would try to change the zoning. And here we are. I fear that there are persons that feel it would be an advantage, so it will get pushed through.

If I am not mistaken, this is the same area that was the hotbed of contention over the building of a new high school. IF it was not appropriate for a high school and all the associated traffic, utility, and environmental impact, why is it okay to develop to such an extreme now?
