Letters to the Editor: Thank You from The Grail Center

November 02, 2012

Thank You from The Grail Center

There are a number of people the Grail Center Staff would like to thank on the heels of events last week.

First of all, we wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Storm King Fire Engine Company #2 for saving our historic house, The Phoenix, on Saturday night, Oct. 27th. When guests who were staying there noticed smoke seeping from a wall behind the living room chimney, we called 911. The Storm King Fire Engine Co. came very quickly, were diligent and respectful of the historic features of the house while acting with urgency to find the source. Thanks to Fire Chief Robby Vought and his masterful crew a potential catastrophe was averted. In the end we suffered serious but localized damage, which we are presently in the process of cleaning up. Repairs to the exterior and interior of the house will continue through the coming weeks. But we feel lucky and blessed to have had such a caring and skilled fire department rescue us from permanent loss. Hurrah for our brave volunteer firefighters!

We also want to thank the anonymous Good Samaritan who chain-sawed through an enormous tree that had fallen across the Grail Trail during Hurricane Sandy, making the pathway through the woods completely impassable. We had resigned ourselves to the fact that we would have to pay someone to clear a way through the woods again. You can imagine our relief and delight when, a few days later, we found that the trail was once again open for passage. Whoever you are, thanks for your gracious gift to us.

And finally, we are truly grateful for our friends and neighbors who generously offered so much help and support in the aftermath of both the fire and the storm. May all of us stay safe and warm.

Sharon Thomson, Center Manager
