Letters to the Editor: Oppose Congressional Act

May 13, 2011

To the Editor:

As a small business owner, I have a lot to worry about, especially in this tough economy. That’s why I’m alarmed and outraged that the U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to pass a bill that would raise taxes on small businesses like mine, simply because I provide comprehensive health insurance to my employees.

The bill is called H.R.3, and it’s a dangerous bill that undermines women’s health. It would raise taxes on small businesses as well as millions of women, men, and families across this country because the private health insurance they choose covers abortion.
This is absurd, since the majority of private health insurance plans include abortion coverage. It’s a very common benefit.

I will either be forced to choose an inferior health plan that my employees won’t like or I‘ll face a tax increase. Raising taxes will only hurt my ability to expand my business, especially in this tough economy.

I worry that the Republican leadership has gotten too caught up in social issues when their apparent priority is to pass bills that raise taxes on small businesses simply because we provide comprehensive insurance to our employees.

I hope that the Republican leadership gets their act together, stops focusing on social issues, stops interfering in my business and instead does something about real issues like fixing the economy.

Comments:

Republicans are fine with raising taxes, as long as it's about intruding into the personal lives of women.

Why do the people of this country consistently vote against their own best interests?
