General News: COH Train Noise Study

October 23, 2017

Assemblyman Skoufis Announces Train Quiet Zone Study for Cornwall-on-Hudson

Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) has announced a $5,400 grant to fund a train quiet zone study for the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. CSX requires a study before any action can be taken to implement a quiet zone at crossings.

Any train passing through the village during the day or night is required to blow its horn three times at each of the two railroad crossings along Donahue Memorial Park. Many residents over the years have reached out to local officials to voice their frustration, particularly with the overnight noise. In an effort to ease the disturbance, Assemblyman Skoufis has secured a grant that will fund a study so that Cornwall-on-Hudson can explore what options are available and at what expense.

“Cornwall-on-Hudson residents often complain about the sound of the train horns in the village,” said Mark Edsall, Deputy Village Mayor. “It will be good to have a formal study of the village’s options to deal with the unwelcome noise and the costs involved. We appreciate Assemblyman Skoufis providing a grant for this study.”

“This is a quality of life issue,” said Assemblyman Skoufis. “People deserve a full night’s sleep without being awakened by train horns at all hours. I look forward to the study’s results and identifying what steps are available to the village.”
