I was a long-time resident of CoH who left NY as soon as I retired due to high taxes and the corrupt state government. I was in a car pool with 5 other people, and we have all retired now. Five of us moved out of NY immediately. Many of my new friends in North Carolina moved here from NY State as well. NY State is going to find out what happens when they run out of other people's money. I live in Tryon, NC, a village in the mountains of Western NC that is exactly like CoH, but with better weather, much lower taxes and friendly people. I saved $10,000/yr. on property taxes alone. Do not be afraid to seek a better retirement life elsewhere. You will not be disappointed.

I'm a veteran too, but I grew up in San Diego. After living in Southern California, Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, and several places overseas I chose to retire in Cornwall-on-Hudson and love it. The property taxes are a little steep, but not as high as Westchester. I am grateful for the property tax breaks I get as a veteran and I am especially grateful that New York does not tax my military pension! But the best things about Cornwall are the natural beauty and the terrific people.
