District Attorney Hoovler Announces Release of Guide
to Help Keep Senior Citizens from Being Defrauded

Booklet of Tips, Information, and Resources to Prevent and Report Fraud

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on November 11, 2016, the publication and release of the first edition of the Orange County District Attorney Senior Fraud Prevention and Resource Guide, a fourteen-page booklet of information designed to help senior citizens to avoid being defrauded. The Guide contains a number of tips for seniors to use in protecting themselves from fraud, including information about safeguarding their credit, avoiding telephone scams, and dealing with unscrupulous companies and contractors. In addition, the Guide contains contact information for seniors to use to check out companies that they are dealing with, and to report fraud if they are unfortunate enough to be victimized.

Copies of the Guide will be mailed to every mayor, town supervisor, and municipal clerk in Orange County. In addition, District Attorney Hoovler and his Community Affairs Unit will be appearing this winter at various municipal board meetings and other events, where they will discuss the Guide and senior fraud scams in general.

“Our senior citizens deserve our respect,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “and they are entitled to our best efforts to help keep them from being victimized by criminals and unscrupulous companies. We prepared the Senior Fraud Prevention and Resource Guide to assist our seniors in defending themselves against those who would victimize them, and to give them some of the resources that might help them if they believe they have been defrauded. I sincerely hope that the Guide helps educate our seniors to avoid being swindled, and gives them the resources to report fraud quickly enough that perpetrators can be brought to justice.”
For further information about the Guide, or to obtain copies, please contact Robert Conflitti, Counsel to the District Attorney, or Darlene De Jesus, Community Affairs Coordinator, at (845) 615-3640, or by email to [email protected].
