Retired police lieutenant speaks to a full house

CORNWALL, NY – Speaking to a packed library community room on Wednesday, October 19th, Retired Police Lieutenant John McLoughlin gave a humbling and very personal account of his experience as one of the last survivors to be pulled out of the wreckage of the Twin Towers on September 11th. McLoughlin worked for the Port Authority for 24 years, 12 of those years at the World Trade Center. He was buried under the rubble along with police rookie William Jimero, who was also rescued. McLoughlin recounted his grueling physical recovery but it was the loss of his police brothers that day that are wounds that will never heal. As he stood before the rapt audience that evening, the general feeling was that his mere presence before us was truly miraculous.

This story of survival is depicted in the Oliver Stone film, World Trade Center, which was released in 2006. McLoughlin retired in 2004 as a lieutenant and received numerous awards including the Port Authority’s Medal of Honor.

Many of those in attendance expressed their gratitude to John for having the courage to share his story and were humbled by his optimism and gratitude for life in the face of extreme circumstances.
