County Executive declares Friday, October 14th “Mastodon Day” in Orange County

Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus spent part of Thursday morning meeting with fourth-grade students at Willow Avenue Elementary School in Cornwall to celebrate “Mastodon Day.”

Debra Gilson, a fourth-grade teacher at Willow Avenue Elementary School, and her class invited Neuhaus to visit after learning the history of mastodons in Orange County. Neuhaus declared Friday, October 14th “Mastodon Day” in Orange County during his meeting with three fourth-grade classes in the school library.

Gilson and her class were previously recognized for their efforts in making “Mastodon Day” a reality at the Orange County Legislature meeting on Oct. 6.

“The fact that the students at Willow Avenue Elementary School have taken such an interest in mastodons and the rich history of Orange County is impressive,” Neuhaus said. “I’m as excited as the students were about declaring October 14 “Mastodon Day” in Orange County. I enjoyed spending time with the schoolchildren, the faculty and the staff at Willow Avenue Elementary School. I thank them for inviting me and being such wonderful hosts.”

Neuhaus was joined at the event by Orange County Historian Johanna Yaun and Town of Cornwall Supervisor Dick Randazzo.

Mastodons have a rich history in Orange County. Thirty-eight skeletons have been found since 1780, making Orange County the unofficial capital of exhumed mastodons in the U.S. Mastodons inhabited North and Central America approximately 10,000 years ago. They are distantly related to elephants.

Last year, Gilson’s entire class sent Neuhaus hand-written letters, asking him to visit their classroom, and make October 14, 2015 “Mastodon Day” in Orange County. The County Executive obliged and gracefully accepted Gilson’s invitation to return to Willow Avenue Elementary School again. Neuhaus presented each of the students with a proclamation certificate, declaring Friday “Mastodon Day” in Orange County.

“We are ecstatic that County Executive Neuhaus, the County Historian and the County Legislature have taken such an interest in the students at Willow Avenue Elementary School,” Gilson said. “They invested so much time in us. We appreciate that County Executive Neuhaus returned to Willow Avenue Elementary School this year to talk to our students. There was a buzz in the school and we enjoyed a special day with him.”
