From the Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT)
August 2016

For the fifth straight year, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) and Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary celebrate local student poetry with a River of Words Poetry Trail, open to the public for free, self-guided tours through Sunday, August 28th.  The trail is a series of temporary installations of nature-inspired poetry by local students winding through one of the Hudson Highlands’ most beautiful settings, the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Garrison, NY.

The poems were created by students during HHLT’s River of Words (ROW) workshops. This year’s featured student poets include Haldane Elementary School students: fourth graders Frankie DiGiglio (teacher, Michelle Hartford), and Brynn Martin and Henry O’Neil (teacher, Jennifer Windels); Putnam Valley Elementary School students: fourth graders Ava Harmon and Javier Salazar (teachers, Susan Boyd and Dawn Alcera); Cornwall Elementary School student: third grader Ronan Murray (teacher, Deborah Moore); and Cornwall’s Willow Avenue Elementary School: third graders Aine Blum (teacher, Kelly Hogan) and Gabriella Uhl (teacher, Eleonora Panzanaro).

The featured poems were chosen from hundreds of poems written during HHLT’s River of Words environmental education workshops offered in five area public school districts throughout the 2015-2016 school year.

A special reception for the young poets, their families and special guests was held on Sunday, August 14th, featuring a live reading by award-winning poet and River of Words educator, Irene O’Garden. The free, self-guided tour of the HHLT Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh is open to the public and will be available to explore from dawn to dusk, through August 28, 2016. Poetry Trail maps are located at the Constitution Marsh parking lot and information center, as well as local libraries and the HHLT’s office at Winter Hill in Garrison.

In September, the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum will host a River of Words Poetry Trail that will feature a different set of poems written by children from both sides of the river.

HHLT’s Hudson Highlands Regional River of Words environmental education program incorporates observation-based nature exploration and the arts into traditional education. The program focuses on the Hudson River watershed, training teachers to use nature as a learning laboratory, conducting student workshops that inform on ecology, local history and natural resources protection, and tying nature-inspired, outdoor-based instruction to the New York State Core Curriculum Standards. It is made possible by the generous support of the RBC Blue Water Project, The Vidda Foundation and the Pig Difference Foundation.

HHLT’s environmental education program is based on the national River of Words (ROW) program, co-founded by US Poet Laureate Robert Hass, and affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is an accredited, non-profit, community-based land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character, and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.  Through its educational outreach, the Land Trust strives to instill the importance of stewardship in the area’s youngest residents.  For more information, please visit www.hhltrow.org or call 845/424- 3358 x7.
