Mount presents Lectures on Business Ethics

February 09, 2010

The Catholic and Dominican Institute at Mount Saint Mary College will present two lectures on ethics in business by the Rev. William J. Byron, S.J., Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Aquinas Hall. The lectures are free and the public is welcome.

Byron is a professor of business and society at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and is a former president of the Catholic University of America and the University of Scranton.

The first lecture, "The Making of an Ethical Executive," is aimed for undergraduate and graduate business students and will start at 4 p.m. The second, "The Relationship of Catholic Social Teaching to Politics and the World of Work," is aimed for graduate students and community business leaders and will start at 7:15 p.m. Both talks are based on Byron's 2006 book, "The Power of Principles: Ethics for the New Corporate Culture."

Byron taught "Social Responsibilities of Business at Georgetown University, where he held an appointment as Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Ethics. He writes a syndicated bi-weekly column, "Looking Around," for the
Catholic News Service. In addition to the "The Power of Principles," he has written a dozen books on business, education and spiritual issues.

The Pittsburgh native has a doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland, two theology degrees from Woodstock College, a bachelor's in philosophy and a master's in economics from Saint Louis University, and a
certificate in educational management from Harvard. He has been awarded 30 honorary degrees.

Rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition, the Catholic and Dominican Institute promotes MSMC's Dominican heritage and charism of learning and service; provides a forum for discussion of contemporary ethical issues; and
enhances Catholic and Jewish dialogue.

To learn more about the lectures and the institute, call Ann Damiano, chair of the institute, at 845-569-3176.
