Cornwall Library to host lecture on historic WWII Doolittle Raid
CORNWALL – The Cornwall Public Library will host a lecture, “Top-Secret Revenge: The Doolittle Raid,” at 1 p.m. March 12. Aviation historian Matt Soltis will present the lecture.
Jimmy Doolittle is a significant record-setter in aviation history. During World War II, he led a top-secret mission that involved launching land-based B-25 bombers from the short deck of an aircraft carrier. These bomber crews gave America a spark of hope.
Soltis’s interest in aviation history was sparked during the centennial anniversary of flight in 2003, when a full-scale Wright Flyer was constructed for a celebratory flight at Kitty Hawk. Since then, he has taken great joy in building models of historic aircraft. He has extensively studied everything from pioneers such as Glen Curtiss and Octave Chanute, to The Red Baron’s “Flying Circus.” In 2015, Soltis earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mount Saint Mary College.
The lecture is free, and registration is not required.
