Letters to the Editor: Thank you from BFF

October 21, 2014

Letter to the Editor:

“Cornwall Demonstrates True Meaning of Community”

So many local Towns and Villages talk about the value of “community”; Cornwall not only vocalizes it but proves it with true action and support.

On behalf of the entire Cornwall Backpack’s For Food family of organizers and volunteers, I wish to thank each and every individual, family, business, local church and community service organization for the overwhelming support shown to the program.
Immediately from the brainchild concept of Sally Mattausch and Margaret Vatter, the Cornwall BFF has seen groundswell support at all levels. The Cornwall Presbyterian Church initialized the concept as a mission program providing financial, physical plant and not-for-profit status support. Then through informational outreach, there were community churches, individuals, business leaders, school district officials, community service organizations and municipal leaders all asking “how can we help!” This only happens in a caring, loving and dedicated community.

We recently held a fundraising “Movie Night”, showing “THE LEGO MOVIE” with sponsorship support of the WEL Foundation at Lee Road Elementary School. The “Movie Night” was a huge success and also served as an opportunity to dedicate this year’s Backpack’s For Food program in memory of Christian Martinisi. Following the tragic loss of Christian, the Martinisi family immediately set-up a memorial giving program to benefit BFF in Christian’s memory. Even at a young age, Christian understood and his family promoted the importance of “paying it forward”. The gifts received to date are overwhelming and Christian’s memorial legacy has ensured the long-term viability of the Cornwall Backpack’s For Food program.

It was Mother Teresa who said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” As a community, Cornwall has embraced the “cast stone” and responded with ripples of support in wonderful ways for so many children in need.
We pray that this giving community will continue to support this worthwhile program. For more information on the BFF program or to contribute, please visit www.CornwallBFF.com or contact us at [email protected]. Thank you all for your “Community” support!
