General News: Open Studios Tour

The Orange County Arts Council, through generous sponsorships from M&T Bank, Orange and Rockland Utilities and C & S Wholesale Grocers, is once again hosting its annual free, self-guided, Artist Open Studio Tour that will take place during all four weekends in September, from 11am to 5pm. This Open Studio Tour provides the public with a rare opportunity to tour Orange County’s art studios and art spaces, enjoy and purchase local artwork, interact with local artists, and learn more about each artist’s unique creative process.

This year’s tour will cover four weekends, eighteen towns and over 70 artists. It includes both seasoned Studio Tour participants as well as some never-before-seen arts venues. Booklets listing each artist, their location, contact information and a visual representation of their artwork are available at various locations throughout the county or at the Orange County Arts Council offices.

A seasoned Studio Tour participant, Elaine Sgambati enjoys taking part in the studio tour because of her desire to share her work and her love of art with the public. “My search for truth and beauty in portraying the American landscape and seascape on canvas has given me a profound desire to share this with others. Whether painting florals, still-lifes and interiors inside the studio or painting the grandeur of nature outdoors, our main objective should be to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. I hope visitors enjoy the tour,” says Sgambati. Sgambati studied at the Ridgewood Art Institute in New Jersey and continued her art education in New York at the Art Students League of New York.
Artist Michael Piotrowski raves, “This is my fourth Orange County studio tour and each year I have seen it grow. Being involved in the studio tour gives me an opportunity to meet new people and help other up-and-coming artists by sharing my space with them and giving them a place to show their work as well.” Piotrowski’s passion for oil painting is evident in his Hudson Valley landscapes as well as images from his road trips.
Sculptor David Nolan creatively uses found objects to create his works of art. “The studio tour is wonderful for allowing the general public to see art in the making regardless of whether the studio is a dedicated structure or part of a room.  It also allows other artists to witness a new trick or two. The "art" is the doing and the location doesn't matter. The act of doing carries over into other parts of our lives. I hope the people who visit various studios become aware of this transformation and maybe even try something themselves”, says Nolan.
Susan Hawvermale, Director of Tourism for Orange County, agrees with these sentiments. “The creative spirit rides high in Orange County, and the Studio Tour is a great way to see professional artists working on their inspirations,” says Hawvermale.
The Open Studio Tour opens up the world of artists to everyone; students, seasoned collectors, first-time art buyers and the curious general public. To request a copy of this year’s Open Studio Tour booklet or to find the closest distribution location, please call the Arts Council’s offices at 845-469-9168 or email [email protected]. At the end of August, the public will also be able to download a version of the booklet by logging onto the Art Council’s website at www.ocartscouncil.org.
