General News: Library Receives NYS Construction Grant

July 22, 2014

from the Cornwall Public Library

CORNWALL, NY – Cornwall Public Library has received a Public Library Construction Grant from New York State in the amount of $16,842. The announcement was recently made by Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian, Bernard A. Margolis. Monies come from the 2014 State Budget for the construction of public library and public library system buildings in New York State.

Cornwall Library’s grant will be used toward installation of acoustical canopies called “clouds” that will mitigate the level of noise in the children’s and circulation areas. The clouds will be strategically placed in certain parts of the barrel ceiling that runs from one end of the building to the other -- a source of sound being carried along that same course. The project falls into the library’s Master Plan, prepared by Paul Mays of Butler Rowland Mays, LLC of Ballston Spa, NY and adopted by the Board of Trustees last year. Installation is expected to take place in December 2014.

The basis for the Master Plan began with a program of comprehensive market research executed by the library in 2011. The initiative included a community survey and several focus groups that represented different segments of the population. The goal was to ascertain how patrons and the community-at-large viewed the library and its current levels of programs and services, and to find out what they would like to see modified or added. Reduction of the sound/noise level was one of several concerns expressed in the survey and focus groups.

"Placement of acoustic canopies over the children's and circulation areas of the library will help mute the level of sound that is a byproduct of being a very active and busy library. The clouds will also be aesthetically pleasing in appearance," said Susanne Vondrak, President of the library's Board of Trustees. "We are pleased to be moving ahead with our Master Plan, while being able to address the requests and concerns of our patrons."

As part of its mission, the Cornwall Public Library Foundation is actively fundraising in support of the clouds installation. On Friday, September 12th, they will host their 2nd annual Golf Outing at Crystal Springs Golf Club. Last year’s event was deemed a great success. The Foundation is currently seeking sponsors for this great event and now registering golfers interested in playing on one of the top 10 courses in NJ. Raffle tickets for several valuable prizes are being sold at the Friends of Cornwall Library book store. All proceeds go toward the soundproofing installation.
