General News: STOP-DWI LABOR DAY CRACKDOWN

September 03, 2015

Orange County to participate in statewide

Stop-DWI Enforcement Effort during Labor Day weekend

DWI Crackdown Checkpoints will run through Sept. 7

Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus, Sheriff Carl E. DuBois, District Attorney David Hoovler and Orange County Stop-DWI Coordinator Craig W. Cherry announced on Thursday that police will be cracking down on impaired drivers over Labor Day weekend.

The Orange County Stop-DWI program is providing funding to police agencies throughout the County to provide police sobriety checkpoints and extra patrols to help ensure that our roadways are safe during Labor Day weekend. Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.  Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the problem.

“Our message to residents is simple: If you drink, don’t drive,” Neuhaus said. “Orange County has a zero-tolerance policy for anyone driving under the influence. There is no excuse for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. During this holiday weekend, all Orange County police agencies will strictly enforce DWI laws.”

Cherry urged residents to utilize the “Have A Plan” mobile app (http://www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp), which was developed by the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee and the NYS Stop-DWI Foundation. The app provides timely resources that allow users to locate and call a taxi service, program a designated-driver list, education on Blood Alcohol Levels (BAC) and information about DWI laws and penalties. The app is available for Apple, Droid and Windows smart phones.

“Impaired driving puts every motorist at risk and those danger only increases during the holidays,” Hoovler said. “Don’t put yourself, your family, or anyone else in danger by drinking and driving.”

DuBois added: “Drivers need to be ever vigilant in the operation of motor vehicles, especially when it comes to drinking and driving.  It is the responsibility of everyone to have a plan if you plan to drink alcoholic beverages, so that you are not driving, or that you allow someone to drink and drive.  Holidays and back to school are supposed to be happy memories, not life ending or altering tragedies. Let’s all work together to be responsible on the roads and have those happy memories years from now.”

The STOP-DWI Crackdown is comprised of several enforcement periods promoted by the state STOP-DWI Foundation. These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.
