Karen Schaack took this photo on Friday morning of some of the dozens of large cargo containers and other ships that headed north up the Hudson River away from the high winds of Hurricane Irene that expected to hit the lower Hudson River on Saturday night and Sunday. A tropical storm warning, with gusting winds as high as 70 mph, has been issued for Orange County.
That's pretty much the view from our deck on Grandview, so I had a front-row seat throughout Irene. As an ex-merchant mariner, I can say there were no "cargo containers" (whatever they are) out there, nor were there any "ships." They were all barges. Every one of them.
