The Band-Stand & Gazebo Renovations

By Iris Kirkland

Cornwall-on-the-Hudson is a small village with great pride in their historical sites. The band-stand built in 1985 and the gazebo built in 2006 are two sites that has recently become projects for renovations and enhancements.

The original band-stand built in 1885, by Mead and Taft company. In 1920 it was moved to make room for the 218 highway that goes through the village. In 1985 the village decided to bring back the band-stand. The village provided the materials and Robert LaRoe a teacher of Dutches County Boces High-School had his students build the band-stand as a school project.

Almost thirty years later the band-stand still exist as one of the village's great assets. “It brings the community together,” said Peter Osinski, a local musician who has lived in Cornwall for 29 years. He also serves as a volunteer who scouts talent for the famous free concerts located at the band-stand every Tuesday evening between Memorial and Labor day.

With plenty of use, eventually the band-stand needed renovations. The village began raising monies to get the work done, especially in time for the band-stand 30th Anniversary, June 14, 2015.

The village received a grant for approximately $5,000.00 through the State. The village put a bid out to see what the estimates would cost for labor. However, Bryan Foley and his wife Laurie Foley of Foley Landscaping Company volunteered their services for free. They replaced deck boards, some railings, and construction frames, along with a fresh coat of paint. The projected started October 8th, 2014 and took seven days to complete. For the Foley family it was the least they could do, they said. They wanted to show their appreciation to those who helped them when they almost lost their home in a house-fire on May 20, 2014. “The support from the community was in a good way,” Mr. Foley said.

Renovated, with a strong foundation, and a clean new look, the band-stand continues to provide a place for residents of Cornwall to congregate during the warm months, mingle with friends, go to free concerts, and build memories.

The gazebo, although not as old as the band-stand has its share of history. Built in 2006 in the Donahue Memorial Park with funding from the County and State. The same year the gazebo was dedicated to for former Trustee Tony Ferraro.

Many go to the gazebo for the view, to take pictures, eat their lunch or just to relax. However, some may not realize that those small things are benefits that not everyone have access to. For a wheel-chair bound resident it's a little difficult to enjoy the benefits of the gazebo.

The Village Mayor Brendan G. Coyne said this problem brought to his attention in 2011, back when he got re-elected for office. A resident of Cornwall-on-the-Hudson came to his office in a wheel-chair and explained how difficult it was to reach the gazebo. This concerned Coyne, who eventually worked on a grant to fund a ramp that will go from the parking lot to the gazebo.

The Orange County Community Development approved a grant for $15,000.00 and the village will have major engineering counting business put together a plan for a ramp. There's no exact date as to when this project will begin.
