July 12, 2018
To the Editor:
It is abhorrent, that in 2018, politicians are trying to force control over American people’s reproductive rights. The Trump-Pence administration has proposed changes to the Title X Family Planning program, preventing patients from receiving medically-accurate information and prohibiting providers from presenting all options to the people they serve. If the proposed gag rule would take effect, millions of people will not have access to the basic health care they need, including birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment. Health care providers would be unable to share information about pregnancy options, preventing patients from being referred for safe and legal abortions.
As a student earning my undergraduate degree in public health with a deep passion for and focus on maternal health, I prize accessibility to accurate information. My plans to practice obstetrics and gynecology following medical school depend heavily on ensuring that patients are well-informed, and I aspire to practice medicine so that I can empower women with the tools to take care of themselves. With this proposed rule, however, my promise to provide safe high-quality care is severely undermined.
Many agree. Major medical associations, like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Physicians, and others oppose this rule. Over 200 members of Congress and more than 110 public health organizations also have expressed opposition to a gag policy.
It is unbelievable that this rule expects health care providers to withhold crucial information from patients who trust them. This rule is an attempt from the Trump-Pence administration to block people from seeking necessary preventative care, and the American people will not tolerate putting the health and rights of our families, friends, and fellow neighbors in danger.
From now until July 31st, the public’s voice is louder than ever. We are in a 60-day comment period, in which attending local events, following new updates on social media, and contacting representatives is more essential than ever. Make your opinion heard, and together we can make a difference.
Sincerely,
Julie Morel
