Obituaries: Ernest A. Marvin, Jr.

Ernest A. Marvin, Jr. died peacefully with family by his side on September 20, 2017 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY.
The son of the late Ernest Marvin, Sr. and Margaret (Cassells) Marvin, Ernest was born on December 31, 1930 in Newburgh, NY and lived in Highland Falls, NY, before moving to Cornwall in 1960 where he spent the rest of his life.
Ernest graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and then went on to marry Gertrude Frattarola in 1954. He attended Infantry and Field Artillery schools in 1954 and 1957 respectively, before being deployed for service in Japan and Korea. He left active military service in 1965 but continued to serve the country he loved for another 25 years in the Army Active Reserves retiring in 1990 as the Commander of the 1163rd ARCOMM school where he was the Mentor and Teacher of Army leaders all over the world, becoming a lifelong friend to many. Ernest was awarded numerous service medals that included multiple Meritorious Service Awards, multiple Military Merit Awards, the National Defense Service Medal and a Reserve Components Achievement Medal.
In 1965, he began teaching Science and Math at Cornwall Central High School, becoming the chairman of the Math department in 1972. While at CCHS he coached basketball, football and baseball, winning conference and district championships in baseball and basketball and a state championship in basketball. He also served as the CCHS interim Principal for almost 2 years. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1990.
Ernest served on the Cornwall town board for 8 years as the elected town Councilman, and also as the Deputy Supervisor, before retiring from politics in 1975. He was a big Army football fan, never missing a game for almost 60 years. He also loved following the NY Giants and the NY Mets.
Ernest was an avid fisherman enjoying many days on the lake with his sons and grandsons. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, vacationing and visiting them.
In addition to his loving wife Gertrude, Ernest is survived by his two sons: Ernest A. Marvin, III and his wife Doreen of Norwich, CT and Michael D. Marvin and his wife Carole of Highland Falls, NY; his grandchildren: Dominic Marvin of Highland Falls, NY, Jenna Marvin of Sleepy Hollow, NY, Dr. Kastley Marvin, LT USN currently stationed in San Diego, CA, and Stefan Marvin from New London, CT.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday, October 2nd at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3rd at the Chapel of Most Holy Trinity, 699 Washington Road, West Point, NY. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow the Mass at the West Point Cemetery. For those wishing to attend the Mass, please meet at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home by 9:15 a.m.
