Letters to the Editor: Braine for Town Councilman

September 12, 2017

 Dear Editor,

Cornwall is at a moment of great opportunity to strengthen for its future, and I am eager to be a part of our continued vitalization. That’s why I am running for Councilman on the Town Board.

Our Comprehensive Plan and the earlier Glynwood study are excellent guides for enhancing the commercial tax base, retail commerce, property values, recreation, and natural beauty of Cornwall. We’ve recently seen record crowds in town, thanks in part to Storm King Art Center and local businesses. Technology, energy, and commuting trends are changing in Cornwall’s favor. With our opportunities we also face challenges—from population loss, pipelines and wells to opioids, oil trains, anchorages, and sewer infrastructure. Each issue needs to be faced and proactively managed in the Town’s interest. I can help.

As a Councilman, I will help foster a sustainable business environment, increased (and managed) tourism, predictable institutional presences, and intelligent conservation of large parcels, among other measures.

Why me? I bring the right mix of experience in business, the arts, and government, all with a local focus:
Chair of Cornwall’s Economic Development Advisory Committee, which framed the Cornwall Rising project currently in planning stages.
Co-created a social media page called Cornwall Common Sense, dedicated to ensuring that the public’s voice is part of tax-friendly land use and other decisions.
Founding member of the Cornwall Community Co-Op and volunteer at Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Habitat for Humanity Newburgh.
Co-host of the Cornwall-on-Hudson New Year’s Eve Ball Drop for the past three years.
Director at Mastercard (10 years).
My novel, Bone Hollow, is set nearby and published locally. I have featured the town in Runner’s World magazine and in my Running column for the Times Herald-Record.
I co-created the iPhone app TickTime to help remember tick checks—drawn from Cornwall life and using local talent.
Be assured that I am collegial, professional, focused—and eager to include residents and fellow Board members to manage the inevitable changes Cornwall faces. I also recognize that most of the Council member’s role is to help administer a Town that already works.

As I knock on doors with my fellow Council member candidate Carla Castillo this campaign season, I ask for your feedback. And on November 7 I will ask for your vote.

Many thanks,
Bill Braine

Comments:

I hope to meet you, if you visit Idlewild Creek and knock on doors prior to the election. It gave me a good chance to meet and speak with Carla Castillo.
