Poetry Competition Awards Presented

CORNWALL, NY – On Sunday, May 1st, the Cornwall Public Library was pleased to recognize several young people whose original poems were named best in Cornwall Public Library’s Annual Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition. The competition is held every year in memory of Tim Mumford, a Cornwall graduate who was a talented artist and writer. Four of the six winners read their poems to an appreciative audience, after which they received their awards during a special ceremony that took place in the library’s community room. The winner of the 13-15 age group was a young student, O. Sarah Adegbite, from England, who already has several poetry competition awards under her belt. Sarah had found out about the competition online through the library’s website and was very excited when she heard she had been chosen as a winner. Her poem, “written underneath the skin,” was recorded live and emailed to the library so it could be played in front of the audience.

Over 100 original poems submitted by 76 people ages 5-18 were read and critiqued by three independent judges: Randall Enos, Margaret Hack and Kris Karaban, who had no knowledge of the authors other than their ages. The judges then conferred with one another to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding best poem in each age category, and best overall poem.

The 2016 winners are:
Ages 5-6 – Macie Bea Stermer, Age 6, “Spring Peepers”
Ages 7-9 – Nicholas Costanzo, Age 9, “Snake”
Ages 10-12 – Benjamin Harrell, Age 11, “Penguins”
Age 13-15 – Opefoluwa Sarah Adegbite, Age 13, “written underneath the skin”
Age 16-18– John Cameron DiLillo, Age 17, “The Day”
Best Overall Poem – Katie Murphy, Age 18, “The Eternal Canvas”

All winning poems will be posted on the library’s website (http://www.cornwallpubliclibrary.org/mumford-poetry/).
