Letters to the Editor: OC Government Center

March 05, 2015

Consider when you vote today on the disposition of the OC Government Center, how preposterous it is to pay money to tear down a perfectly good building and pay more money to build a new building - all while paying rent for a third group of buildings. Is this how a responsible public officials perform their fiduciary role?

I'm ashamed of our County legislature that they would by such poor custodians of the public's assets and such terrible managers of the public's finances. We already suffer with a pathetic debt rating and the tax burden is considerable given what we receive in services. Your time is much better spent on saving Orange County residents money, smart development, rebuilding infrastructure, economic development and developing Orange County tourism than redecorating/rearranging county buildings. You should be trying to attract new residents to the area - not repel them with irresponsible sophomoric political antics.

Make no mistake: vote to tear down the Government Center and there will be crowds to block the bulldozers and social media thoroughly embarrass you and will bury your public careers. Step away from the edge of insanity and take our County down the fiscally responsible road. Accept the design legacy of the County Government Center - it is a classic like it or not. I'd rather suffer with the design of the building than to suffer with a legacy tax burden for decades.

Comments:

The Orange County Center is an important work of architecture by Brutalist Paul Rudolph. (Brutalism refers not to "being a brute" or being brutal but t the French word for the rawness of the concrete used in the building's exterior.) Whether or not you like the style is irrelevant. Those who would tear it down are no different than are the ISIS disciples who destroy ancient Persian works of art.

I,for one,am much more interested in Orange County taxpayers and a suitable county center than spending money on a monument for an architect.I think selling it, rather than spending money on demolition, might be the best way to go.

Good idea, Al.

Despite its so-called "beauty", the government center is a moldy, leaky, and confusing labyrinth for anyone who has ever had to work in it or go to it for government services. I am surprised that the county has not had more lawsuits against it for the health hazard that the building presents to the employees that had to breath in mold and funk.I would be quite happy to see it demolished and replaced with a building that reflects the style and grandeur of historic Goshen.

I think that comparing the people who dislike the OC gov't center to the members of ISIS is not only a bit of hysteria, but it demeans those who have lost their lives in a very serious and ugly war.
