Orange County Land Trust Receives $50K Donation for Land Conservation

Sugar Loaf, NY (OCLT): The Orange County Land Trust has received a $50,000 donation for land conservation efforts from a private foundation, according to an announcement by the non-profit organization. The gift comes at a time when in recent months the land trust helped secure the protection of critical acreage in the Black Rock Forest corridor and southern Shawangunk Ridge.

The donation will be placed in the Land Trust’s Acquisition Fund, which was created as a result of an anonymous gift in 2012. Since then, the fund has enabled the organization to protect two additional properties in excess of 500 acres.

According to Land Trust Executive Director Jim Delaune, this is one of the largest contributions the organization has seen since in its history.

"We are completely blown away by the generosity of this foundation," said Delaune. "This incredible gift says a lot about how strongly people feel about seeing these lands protected. People love Orange County’s natural and agricultural heritage; it is their identity and it is one that they want to pass on to future generations," Delaune added.

In addition to this major contribution, the Land Trust recently received $7,500 from the Open Space Institute for stewardship efforts in the Black Rock Forest corridor. The two organizations have worked collaboratively in making the corridor a priority for conservation.

“The Open Space Institute supports the protection of key watershed and forested properties in the Black Rock Forest corridor by purchasing land from willing sellers and by investing in long term stewardship through terrific partners like the Orange County Land Trust,” said Terrence Nolan, Senior Vice President of Conservation Transactions at OSI.

"OCLT is proud to partner with such an accomplished organization as the Open Space Institute. We look forward to working with OSI and our other partners, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust
and Black Rock Forest Consortium, on this and other important conservation projects in the coming year," stated Delaune.

Since 1993, the Orange County Land Trust has helped protect nearly 5,000 acres of fields, forests, wetlands, ridgelines and river corridors in and around Orange County for the benefit of people. To become a member or for more information, visit www.oclt.org
