SLCH Raises Breast Cancer Awareness, Celebrates Patients and Survivors

Newburgh, NY – In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital hosted numerous educational sessions, screenings and events to raise awareness and funds, as well as celebrate the lives of patients and survivors.

The hospital’s month of activities kicked off with a breast cancer self-exam education seminar at the Marasco Senior Center in New Windsor. In partnership with the Littman Cancer Center and the Orange County Cancer Services Program at the YWCA, SLCH hosted several clinical breast cancer exams and mammograms free of charge at the hospital’s Newburgh campus.

Throughout the month, SLCH partnered Brighton Collectibles for the third year in a row in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From September 27 through October 31, Brighton at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets sold a special edition “Power of Pink” bracelet, with $10 from every sale being donated to the Littman Cancer Center.

On Tuesday, October 28, SLCH hosted a Luminary lighting to celebrate breast cancer patients and survivors. The event gathered community members and staff to celebrate those who have been affected by cancer.

Hospital staff sold pins and ribbons in support of breast cancer awareness and research, which raised more than $400 to donate to local organizations.

“We were able to do coordinate a number of events that provided valuable services, as well as raise a significant amount of money that will benefit the local community,” said Daniel Maughan, SLCH is Assistant Vice President of Emergency, Surgical, Trauma & Cancer Services. “We want to thank everyone who participated for their generosity.”

The hospital also received a generous donation from the Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) girls volleyball team as part of a new initiative focused on giving back to the community. The inaugural Charity Night, benefitting St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s Littman Cancer Center was held on October 15 at NFA’s main campus. The team presented SLCH officials with a check for $1,000 to support the Cancer Center, in recognition of the hospitals high quality care and dedication to the community.

In addition, SLCH proudly sponsored and participated in local events including the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Walk and the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. SLCH hosted an informational table and served as the presenting sponsor at West Point’s “Dig Pink” breast cancer themed volleyball game against Bucknell on October 25.
